We designed the original Japango Sushi restaurant back in 1999 (on a shoe-string); it won a couple of architecture awards and became one of Boulder’s favorites. Fast forward to 2014 – the owner asked us to come back to design and build a top-to-bottom remodel and expansion, creating a modern twist on traditional concepts. The all new space adds exciting, comfortable seating areas, a new Pearl Street façade, dynamic lighting, a cylindrical jellyfish tank, and beautiful creative finishes inspired by the Japanese sake box. Patrons love the new feel and the restaurant continues to be packed.

We recently completed the design and construction of this beautiful 3800 s.f. contemporary Colorado mountain home, on one of Gold Hill’s original homesteads. We designed the house to maximize the sweeping views of the Switzerland Trail and Indian Peaks mountain range. The open floor plan brings natural light and passive cooling into every part of the house; the vaulted ceilings create an airy, sunny feeling. Every room opens to generous patios and decks to facilitate easy indoor/outdoor living. White Oak floors, granite counters and local flagstone finishes lend a warm modern texture to the home. We carefully preserved one hand-built quartz wall that was part of the house that formerly occupied the site, and restored the original adjacent homestead, successfully receiving Historic Landmark designation. This very energy efficient home (HERS 40 – uses 60% less energy than allowed by code), uses solar–photovoltaics, foam insulation, Energy Star windows & appliances, LED lighting, and a high-efficiency mechanical system. It uses EPA Watersense plumbing fixtures and Xeric landscaping to dramatically reduce water use.

This LEED Platinum certified modern farmhouse is our first “regenerative home,” producing more energy than it consumes. This 3,400 s.f. custom home uses passive solar design, 10.2kW of solar photovoltaics, a ground source heat pump, double wall well-insulated exterior envelope, high performance doors and windows, to achieve a HERS negative -8 rating and Energy Star v.3.0 certification. The interior has low-VOC finishes and custom built-in FSC-certified wood and beetle kill pine cabinets throughout. The site is designed to be very low water use, incorporating permaculture and urban farming, with raised planting beds and a passive solar chicken coop/greenhouse. What makes this project special is its combination of extraordinary sustainability with conventionally attractive, cost-effective design tailored to the owner’s needs.

The design of this contemporary, green, mountain home was inspired by the way one ascends the challenging sloping site. Enter through the Cedar clad garage or the covered front entry and walk into a beautiful tiled foyer. Follow the sculptural Hickory stair as it winds it’s way up to the airy center of the home. It lands dramatically at the grand fireplace in a way that feels like you’re entering a beautiful treehouse for grownups. In front of you, the Great Room wall of glass opens to a large floating covered deck and expansive views of the Boulder plains. The stair continues above the Great room to a floating walkway that delivers you to two flanking bedrooms. The main floor Master bedroom has a walk-in closet, a 5 piece bath and a private balcony. The sunny, open floor plan and double French doors connect the gourmet kitchen, dining and great room to both the front and the back of the house, where a large flagstone patio is terraced into the landscaped hillside.
